The new year at St. Francis of Assisi School started with movement in the morning. All the students and parents who arrive at school before the bell rings start walking around the blacktop visiting with friends. Our bodies are meant to move. When we are active we get the blood flowing and get our brains ready for learning. In this world governed by technology it is crucial to keep children moving. Greater rates of activity have been associated with deeper engagement and learning in the classroom. It also decreases obesity and improves self-efficacy regarding health and self-image. When the bell rings students stop to pray and then continue with a series of cross body movements for about ten minutes. Then they go off to class for a great day of learning!
