Christmas, Catholic Identity, and Math! How do they all go together? Christmas is a great time to celebrate with cookies, candies, and other goodies. But how can we solve real world problems of hunger, homeless, poverty issues and learn math.
St. Francis Middle School students, combined math projects involving unit rates, proportions, and percentages with Corporal Works of Mercy to help the homeless. They made “goodie bags” filled with healthy protein snacks, hygiene items, and games after calculating unit rates and following a budget to purchase items for the bags. They also enjoyed cookies, and chocolate rolls after figuring out the circumference, and volume.
What a great way to get students engaged in math and recognize our call by God to help others by demonstrating kindness, compassion and sharing our gifts with others in need!
